Although the Bowdoin College Museum of Art will be
closed for extensive renovations, the Museum of Art will be presenting
an exhibition of work from the Vinalhaven Press in two galleries at
the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, Maine. During its
nearly twenty-year history, the Vinalhaven Press, founded and directed
by Patricia Nick, attracted a renowned group of Maine, American, Cuban,
and other international printmakers to the Vinalhaven studio, located
in a former island schoolhouse. Printmakers included Mel Chin, Los
Carpinteros, Alison Saar, Robert Cumming, Charles Hewitt, Robert Morris,
Robert Indiana, and Yvonne Jacquette, among many others. Works from
the Vinalhaven Press are found in the permanent collections of many
leading American museums. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art holds the
complete archive of Vinalhaven Press prints, and works from this archive
will be selected by Bowdoin curator Alison Ferris for this exhibition.
