For the past twenty years Claire Van Vliet has traveled to Whiting, Maine from her home in Vermont to make handmade paper edition broadsides and books at the workshops of Bernie Vinzani and Katie MacGregor. Since 1955, Van Vliet has produced a large body of work under her Janus Press imprint, including landscape lithographs and etchings, as well as her more experimental vitreographs, paper editions, and private press books. The landscapes of her surroundings, including Maine, have been influential in the development of her work.

The University of Maine at Machias has recently acquired a number of Van Vliet's prints for its permanent collection. These prints, as well as the paper and book editions from the workshops of MacGregor and Vinzani will be exhibited at the university galleries in October 2006.
