The year 2006 will be the 15th anniversary of Peregrine
Press, Maine’s only non-profit, fine arts printmaking cooperative.
The Reed Art Gallery at the University of Maine at Presque Isle will
mark the occasion with an exhibition of works by Peregrine printmakers.
Established in 1991 by a group of artists interested in printmaking,
Peregrine Press has evolved from its beginnings in a modest studio
space in Portland's Munjoy Hill neighborhood. Founding members included
Alice Spencer, Kate Mahoney, Lin Lisberger and others, with a common
goal: to have a cooperative printmaking studio–a place to work
and an organization of fellow printmaking artists. In 1996 the Press
moved from Munjoy Hill to expanded facilities in The Bakery Building
at 61 Pleasant Street. A former MECA printmaking studio, this space
has been adapted to the needs of the Peregrine members and includes
a separate room for etching and aquatint processes. The larger space
also allowed the Press to expand its membership.
The Reed Art Gallery exhibition will consist of approximately 30 prints,
selected to demonstrate the range of printmaking techniques and artistic
approaches among current and past Peregrine Press members.
